You might not want to hear this, but that doesn’t make it any less true. The world does not owe you anything. There are no magic job fairies working behind the screens to make sure you get the job you want.
Yes that sucks. Believe me, I was more disappointed than you when I found that out. I’d been clapping my hands and everything, just to bring more job fairies into the world. I’d heard that worked. My parents thought I was an idiot.

I probably was. I believed in job fairies after all.
Anyway, to cut to the chase, they don’t exist. That means that if you want to get the job of your dreams, you can’t sit around and wait for it. You’ve got to take action. And you’ve got to do it today.
When they say patience is a virtue they’re not talking about laziness
For the world will not give you anything out of the goodness of its heart (it doesn’t have one, unless you consider the core its heart, and that’s not good. That’s just really hot. You don’t want to touch that. I seem to be heading off on a tangent again).
But if you take the effort to take what you want, to reach out, work hard and try hard, you’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish. You see, most people are lazy, content where they are or have simply come to accept their lot. They don’t try to better themselves. And that means that for those of us that are willing to put in the effort, the opportunities are out there.

It’s a world of stepping stones
The first step is to accept that you might not get your dream job straight off the bat. If you keep applying and they keep passing you over, then it might be time to accept that you’re going to have to make your way towards it.
You’ve got to find stepping stones in this river of life that bring you closer to your goal. These can be jobs that require similar skills to your dream job, or a job in the same company as where they have your dream job, with the hopes of getting promoted internally. If you’re still in university, see about getting jobs that will boost your resume.
Or it might mean taking courses that teach you the skills that you need in order to get the job you want. Just make sure that it is certified or accredited, so that you’ve got written proof that you did the things you had to, so that you can get the job you want to.

Start networking
Start building your network. Find people in the industry who know what the job is about and ask them questions, pick their brains for useful information. They can give you the inside scoop on what’s happening and if you can somehow convince them that you’re right for the job, then they can tell you when there is an opening somewhere (And possibly even write you a letter of recommendation or put in a good word).
So find out where people in the industry go and start hanging out there as well. Make friends, have a few drinks (but remain professional) and start working the job from the other angle – because, as they say, it’s not what you know, but who you know.
Don’t give up
If it really is your dream job, then you’ve got to work at it. Even if you’ve already got a job, or you’re finishing degree, don’t stop looking. Keep your ears open and always keep searching the websites for hints.
Yes, that is very hard. I’ll be the very first person to admit it. But the thing is, when you have the discipline to do it in this manner, you don’t have to bow out of the job hunt because you’ve been poor for too long, or because people are dependent on you and your paycheck. You can keep looking and keep searching for as long as it takes to find an opening, get an interview and get a job offer.
And besides, how impressive do you think it will be to a HR manager when you admit that you’ve been checking the sites every weekend for over a year to find this job, because this is what you really want, this is the dream job you’ve been waiting for?
